Lesson Theme: The
purpose of this lesson is to help the student to understand their continuing
responsibilities as a Christian according to the pattern of the New Testament.
Role of Women
8 I want men everywhere to lift up holy hands in
prayer, without anger or disputing.
9 I also want women to dress modestly, with decency
and propriety, not with braided hair or gold or pearls or expensive clothes, 10
but with good deeds, appropriate for women who profess to worship God.
11 A woman should learn in quietness and full
submission. 12 I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a
man; she must be silent. 13 For Adam was formed first, then Eve. 14 And Adam
was not the one deceived; it was the woman who was deceived and became a
sinner. 15 But women will be saved through childbearing-if they continue in
faith, love and holiness with propriety.
o Overall theme of women to be modest, decent and submissive
- Woman
should never place herself in a position where she would have authority
over a man
- She
should not seek to exert dominion by the questions she asks.
As in all the congregations of the saints, 34 women
should remain silent in the churches. They are not allowed to speak, but must
be in submission, as the Law says. 35 If they want to inquire about something,
they should ask their own husbands at home; for it is disgraceful for a woman
to speak in the church.
36 Did the word of God originate with you? Or are
you the only people it has reached? 37 If anybody thinks he is a prophet or
spiritually gifted, let him acknowledge that what I am writing to you is the
Lord's command. 38 If he ignores this, he himself will be ignored.
o Again, women should not seek to draw attention to
themselves through their questions
- This
was a command for all congregations, not just this one.
- V
36 shows we have no authority to countermand this command.
Duties of all Christians:
1 Peter 4:7-11
7 The end of all
things is near. Therefore be clear minded and self-controlled so that you can
pray. 8 Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude
of sins. 9 Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling. 10 Each one
should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully
administering God's grace in its various forms. 11 If anyone speaks, he should
do it as one speaking the very words of God. If anyone serves, he should do it
with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised
through Jesus Christ. To him be the glory and the power for ever and ever.
Amen.
