Judges Chapters 17, 18, 19

Overview of Chapters 17, 18, and 19:  The mother of Micah, who lived in Ephraim, had a cast idol made which was placed in the house of Micah. In those days there was no king in Israel, so Micah appointed one of his sons to become his priest. Later a young man from Bethlehem came to live with Micah and was installed as a priest. The tribe of the Danites sent five men to search for a place to live. They met the young Levite and he informed them that their mission was under the eye of the Lord. Later the five men went on, and when they came to Laish, they were advised to take their land. This same five men stole the idol from the home of Micah. A certain Levite, residing in the remote parts of the hill country of Ephraim, took to himself a concubine from Bethlehem in Judah. But she became angry with him, and went back to her father's house, and was there some four months. Then her husband set out after her. He stayed at the home of his father-in-law for several days and then started home with her. On their trip they spent the night at Gibeah. While there the concubine was repeatedly raped by some of the men of the town. When he arrived home and entered his house, he took a knife, and he cut her body into twelve pieces, and sent her body throughout all the territory of Israel.     (Overview for this reading compliments of Gene Harlow)
