I Samuel Chapters 14, 15

Overview of Chapters 14 and 15:  Jonathan, Saul's son, decided to attack the Philistines without his father's knowledge or consent. He was victorious; afterward Saul decided to go into battle against the Philistines. Because of an oath that Saul made "Cursed be the man who eats food until it is evening and I am avenged on mine enemies," the Israelites disobeyed God by eating meat with blood as a result of their hunger. Jonathan also disobeyed his father's oath by eating honey; as a result, Saul condemned him to death. The people, though, defended Jonathan because of his great victory over the Philistines. In Chapter 15 we read about another occasion where Saul disobeyed God by not totally destroying all the Amalekites and their possessions. Through the word of the Lord, Samuel told Saul again that the kingdom of Israel would be taken from him.
